British Values are an important part of our school. We place emphasis on the need to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
By promoting British values through SMSC, children gain the understanding and knowledge of:

an understanding of how citizens can influence decision-making through the democratic process

an understanding that the freedom to hold other faiths and beliefs is protected in law

an acceptance that people having different faiths or beliefs to oneself (or having none) should be accepted and tolerated, and should not be the cause of prejudicial or discriminatory behaviour

an understanding of the importance of identifying and combatting discrimination
Our school will help all children to develop an inner discipline and make up their own minds and be ready to accept responsibility for what they do. This is supported by our school restorative approach and embedded within our Gold Rights Respecting School.
Throughout school life, we actively plan opportunities to promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and the fundamental British Values are an integral part of this across the curriculum and beyond. Our curriculum is one which is engaging and develops a range of skills and our ethos encompasses these values throughout school life.
We use a range of resources and promote awareness days in our weekly ‘We Believe’ time and assemblies. We develop continuous provision to nurture the children in our school and offer many opportunities to promote safe discussion based around SMSC qualities and British Values.
Our weekly assemblies focus on Picture News which has specific links to British Values. This is an opportunity for pupils to learn about stories in the news and how they link directly to British Values.
